Lady Gaga’s recent Coachella performance on April 11 left fans feeling the same excitement they experienced when they first discovered her. The singer’s ability to surprise with her fashion and beauty choices was on full display during her 110-minute headlining set. The performance, divided into five acts, stood out not just for its music but for the two striking hairstyles Gaga showcased, each telling its own story.
Gaga’s hairstylist, Freddie Aspiras, explained the concept behind the looks, saying the hair was meant to represent “the tension and harmony between darkness and light.” The first look was a sharp, gothic bob, while the second featured soft, ethereal blonde waves. Aspiras described the bob as “rooted in gothic structure,” with “sharp architectural lines, matte texture, and rich, inky black tones.” The cut, falling just at her jawline and curving inward, reminded many of the style she wore around the time of her Mayhem album release.
During the performance, the bob was covered with a black lace veil placed carefully on her head to avoid disturbing the straight-across bangs. Aspiras noted that the hairstyle wasn’t just about the hair itself, but about “visual storytelling,” shaped by contrast and crafted with intention. It was a look that may inspire fans to consider a bob for the next festival.
The second hairstyle, which came later in the show, featured bouncy blonde curls, described by Aspiras as “hand-dyed in layers of pearl and silver, with ethereal fiber that moved like liquid under stage lights.” The vintage-inspired spirals cascaded over her shoulders and back, enhanced by occasional tiny braids that resembled milkmaid-style braids, reminiscent of her Abracadabra music video. Throughout the performance, her hair and makeup evolved, but she kept a consistent touch with black nail polish, applied by nail artist Miho Okawara using dark Aprés Nails polish.
While Gaga’s look shifted from dark to light, the performance’s message remained clear: the balance between both elements is key. As Aspiras said, light may have won in the end, but it always coexists with darkness—a perfect reflection of Gaga’s ever-evolving persona. Fans are already anticipating more surprises when she takes the stage again, with the upcoming Mayhem Ball just around the corner.
