David Luiz, the former Chelsea defender and Champions League winner, has revealed that he has been receiving treatment for baldness for several years. The 38-year-old’s admission follows the circulation of a photo that showed him with a noticeable bald patch during a match for his current club, Fortaleza, in Brazil.
Luiz, who played for Chelsea between 2011 and 2019 and also had a stint at Arsenal, became famous for his long, curly hair, a trademark that even led some fans to wear wigs in the stands to support his distinctive style. However, a recent image from the weekend match for Fortaleza shocked many, revealing his thinning hair.
In a video shared with his barber, Luiz addressed his hair loss, explaining that it has been an ongoing issue for years. “I’ve lost some hair over time and have been treating baldness for many years,” he said. “I used to love wearing caps, especially in the beginning. Now, it’s harder for me to wear my hair the way I used to, full of curls. It’s become a lot of work to keep it like that. It was simpler to wear a cap and style it that way.”
In the video, Luiz removed his cap to reveal his thinning hair but assured fans that he was taking steps to address it. The barber, however, remained optimistic about Luiz’s hair, claiming there was still “huge potential” for him to maintain his signature curly look.
After receiving a fresh haircut, Luiz was visibly pleased with the results, joking about the transformation. “Where did you stick the baldness?” he laughed, running his fingers through his hair to check for any noticeable patches.
The barber also praised Luiz’s new look, adding that the Brazilian defender looked younger and still had “a lot of football ahead of him.” Luiz, who joined Fortaleza in early 2023, has played in all five of their league matches this season. Fortaleza is currently 14th in Brazil’s top division, with five points from as many games.
