Kate Hudson has taken a page from her mother, Goldie Hawn’s, iconic style book with her new hairstyle for her upcoming role in Song Sung Blue. The actress has swapped her signature long, boho waves for a crimped ’80s perm, a look that instantly recalls Hawn’s signature hairstyle from the era.
In the ’80s, big, voluminous hair was all the rage, but no one did it quite like Goldie Hawn. Her trademark look featured permed curls that fell to her shoulders, paired with messy curtain bangs framing her face—think Seems Like Old Times and Best Friends. Now, Hudson is reviving that iconic style for her role in the upcoming musical biopic, Song Sung Blue.
The film, set to release on Christmas Day this year, is inspired by the 2008 documentary of the same name, which followed the love story of Claire and Mike Sardina, a husband-and-wife Neil Diamond tribute act from the ’80s. Hudson stars alongside Hugh Jackman, who also sports a retro look for his role.
On Instagram, Hudson shared a still from the film, expressing her excitement about the project. “Loved every second making this beautiful film, working with the most lovely work husband you could ask for, [Hugh Jackman], singing the iconic songs of Neil Diamond, led by our wonderful director [Craig Brewer],” she wrote. “More love notes for everyone involved to come… but right now I am just so excited to share with you that we have a release date.”
While Hudson’s new ‘do might remind fans of her mom’s ’80s style, she has openly admitted to learning a lot from Goldie, especially when it comes to hair. In an interview earlier this year with InStyle, Hudson revealed her mom’s hair advice that she now wishes she had followed. “My mom’s first thing was ‘Don’t color your hair!'” Hudson shared. “But I didn’t listen. I started coloring it at 16, and she was very frustrated because she loved my natural color. She said, ‘You’re never gonna get it back.’ And she was right.”
