Currently promoting his new Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, Tom Holland recently shared a funny behind-the-scenes tidbit about his character’s unconventional hair, which Zendaya had to endure for almost a year. In an interview with Radio Times, Tom explained how the look—dark brown with long curls—was part of his transformation into his character from the 1979-set series, but not exactly a style he’d prefer for everyday life.
Holland’s hair, which he described as “scraggly” and not his usual preference (he’s partial to a redder hue like his mom’s), was a necessary element for playing his “may-or-may-not-be-a-murderer” character. Not only did he grow and dye his hair for the role, but he had to keep it for the entire 10-month filming process. Tom laughed as he acknowledged that his girlfriend, Zendaya, had to look at the unflattering hair every day throughout production.
“I really did find myself kind of morphing with him in certain moments. And obviously I had that crazy hairstyle,” Tom said. “Bless Zendaya, she had a lot to put up with, with me looking like that for 10 months, it was rough.” A testament to her patience, Zendaya certainly earned some extra kudos in Holland’s eyes for sticking by him through that hair transformation.
