Jessica Thurmond, a 17-year-old student at North Lawndale College Prep in Chicago, has turned her passion for hairstyling into a viral sensation. During school breaks, she offers free braiding, styling, and hair transformations to her classmates, many of whom cannot afford professional services.
Thurmond’s talent, which she’s nurtured since the age of 8, has caught the attention of millions on social media. Videos showcasing her work have gone viral on TikTok and Instagram, earning her a massive following.
Operating out of a school bathroom-turned-pop-up salon, Jessica provides these services between classes, allowing her to continue focusing on her academics while giving back to her peers. Although she has a growing list of paying clients for weekend appointments, her weekday work is all about community and empowerment.
Kyera Bradley, principal of North Lawndale College Prep, commended Thurmond for embodying the school’s mission of transformation. She hopes the school will offer cosmetology courses before Thurmond graduates, allowing her to further hone her craft and continue inspiring others.
Jessica’s ultimate goal is to continue using her skills to serve others, whether or not the school introduces a formal cosmetology program. She’s already making an impact by giving students a confidence boost, one hairstyle at a time.
