Is Your Protective Hairstyle Making You Sick? A Recent Report Shows It Might Be

by lily

Protective hairstyles like braids, sew-ins, and wigs have long been popular in the hair care routines of many, particularly in the Black community. They offer low maintenance, versatility, and a break from daily styling. However, a recent report from Consumer Reports (CR) raises concerns that some of the synthetic braiding hair products we trust could be harmful to our health.

According to a study published on February 27, 2025, certain synthetic braiding hair brands, commonly found in beauty supply stores and online platforms like Amazon and TikTok, may contain harmful ingredients linked to cancer. The study identified dangerous chemicals such as benzene, methylene chloride, and lead in some of the most popular products from brands like Magic Fingers, Sensationnel, Kanekalon, and Shake-N-Go.

These chemicals are concerning because they have been associated with serious health risks, including cancer. Benzene and methylene chloride, in particular, have been linked to cancer in multiple studies. The report also found that lead was present in many Sensationnel products, and acetone was detected in all of the tested synthetic hair products. Furthermore, heating or boiling the hair, which is a common styling technique, could release these toxic chemicals into the air, potentially causing additional harm to both stylists and clients.

Given the potential for long-term exposure to these chemicals—since protective styles are often worn for weeks or even months—the risks are significant. Symptoms of irritation can appear immediately on the skin, including redness, swelling, and rashes on the scalp, neck, or face.

So, what can we do to protect ourselves? The best approach might be to consider alternatives. Human hair or thread can provide a safer, chemical-free option for achieving long-lasting styles. Not only can these alternatives reduce chemical exposure, but they can also help strengthen your braids, enhance style, and maintain the longevity of your protective look.

This isn’t the first time that products marketed toward Black women have been found to contain harmful chemicals. Lawsuits against chemical hair relaxer companies and other beauty product manufacturers have been ongoing. As we continue to enjoy our protective styles, staying informed and making mindful choices is essential for both beauty and health.
