It’s official: Patrick Mahomes’ iconic mohawk is no more. The quarterback, known for his trademark long and curly hair, has made a significant change—and now his longtime barber is sharing the story behind the big chop.
So why would Mahomes, a player who has built a strong fanbase around his signature hairstyle, decide to part with it?
According to Mahomes’ personal barber, DeJuan Bonds, the decision was partly a result of the frustration of the season’s end. “I just think with the end of the season, frustration maybe, like, ‘You know what, I’m done. It’s time for a new look, change,’” Bonds explained in an interview with Fox News Digital. “It probably was a little bit of frustration, then there was like, ‘Hey, you know, it’s time for a new look.’”
Bonds, who has worked with Mahomes for years, acknowledged that the quarterback had been contemplating a haircut for a while. “A lot of times, when someone says, ‘Cut it off,’ they don’t really know,” he said. But Bonds, with his seasoned expertise, took the opportunity to collaborate with Mahomes, gradually transitioning the style instead of making a sudden, drastic change. “We kind of came to a common ground like, ‘OK, this is the cut, this is the cut, this is the length,’” Bonds said of the process.
The timing of the haircut raised eyebrows, especially since it came just days after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9th, which dashed their hopes of becoming the first NFL team to win three consecutive titles. Mahomes made the decision to cut his hair just two days after the loss, on February 11th. He debuted his new look publicly on February 25th, attending a Texas Tech basketball game with his wife, Brittany Mahomes.
While some fans embraced the change, others expressed sadness over the loss of Mahomes’ signature curls. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the new haircut signifies a fresh start for the quarterback as he moves on from a challenging season.
