If you’re aiming for long, shiny hair, you might think that avoiding haircuts will help your hair grow faster. However, experts warn that skipping regular trims can actually be detrimental to your hair’s health.
Hairstylist and salon owner Dawna Jarvis spoke to GB News about the importance of regular trims. While trimming won’t speed up hair growth, it keeps your hair healthy and prevents split ends from becoming a bigger problem.
“There’s a myth that trimming your hair makes it grow faster, but what really happens is that regular cuts help maintain healthy hair by removing split ends before they spread,” Dawna explained. She stressed that untreated split ends can travel up the hair shaft, leading to breakage.
She advised clients not to skip haircuts if they want their hair to grow long and strong. “If you go too long without a trim, you could end up with mostly broken ends when you finally get a haircut,” she said.
Dawna recommends trimming hair every six to eight weeks. For those who want to keep their hair long, she suggests a “no haircut haircut” — a subtle trim that keeps hair healthy without losing length.
Dawna also shared some advice for women over 50, suggesting they avoid certain hair colors. While darker shades can be stylish, they may highlight signs of aging rather than conceal them.
