Expectation vs. Reality: My Attempt at the Hydro Bob, Summer’s Hottest Hairstyle

by lily

The latest buzz in the hairstyling world is the hydro bob, a sleek, chic haircut sported by celebrities like Sydney Sweeney and Jennifer Lopez. Inspired by their glamorous looks, I decided to try this trending style myself. My journey with the hydro bob had its ups and downs, reflecting a stark contrast between expectation and reality.

The Perfect Cut

A recent trip to Michael & Michael salon marked the beginning of my hydro bob adventure. My hair, typically thick, wild, and unmanageable, had previously made hairstylists hesitate to go above shoulder length. This time, however, my stylist accepted the challenge. She expertly thinned my hair, going shorter than expected to achieve a stunning blunt bob. The result was fantastic and left me feeling confident enough to try the hydro bob.

The Hydro Bob Dream

The hydro bob, described by PureWow’s Chelsea Candelario, is essentially a sleek, slightly wet, chin-length bob that adds definition and enhances natural texture. It’s an editorial look that’s both achievable and elegant. Determined to pull off this sophisticated style, I gathered my hair products and embarked on my hydro bob experiment.

The Reality: DIY Hydro Bob

Step 1: Following Candelario’s guide, I began by washing my hair with Cecred’s Hydrating Shampoo and Moisturizing Deep Conditioner.

Step 2: I then applied Cecred’s Moisturizing Hair Lotion, sectioning my hair and spreading the smoothing cream evenly.

Step 3: To add shine, I used Cecred’s Nourishing Hair Oil, raking a few drops through the mid-lengths and ends of my hair.

Step 4: Anticipating my hair’s tendency to poof, I deviated slightly from the guide by incorporating TRESemmé Mega Hold Gel. This gel promises 24-hour humidity protection without leaving a sticky residue. I applied about a tablespoon’s worth, sweeping my hair back and out of my face.

Step 5: Finally, I let my hair air dry, hoping for the best.

The Outcome

Initially, the hydro bob seemed promising. My hair appeared sculpted with flicked ends, resembling Florence Pugh’s iconic look. However, as my hair continued to dry, it began to poof, defying the efforts of the creams, oils, and gels. Despite this, the gel managed to keep my hair in place without the undesirable ’90s crunch, maintaining a sleek forehead swoop and neatly tucked-behind-the-ears style. The end result, though, leaned more towards “Local Soccer Mom Chops Hair Off” than the chic hydro bob I envisioned.

Lessons Learned

Reflecting on my attempt, I realized that my hair type requires more product to achieve the desired wet, set-in-place look. Next time, I plan to blow dry and straighten my hair before applying generous amounts of water and gel. This approach might help me perfect the sleek, editorial hydro bob. Despite the challenges, the fresh and clean look is one I’m eager to try again, possibly at the next summer wedding. See you at the open bar!
