The “Broccoli” Haircut: The Latest Trend Among Teen Boys

If you’ve been around teenagers lately, you’ve likely noticed a surge in a new haircut trend: the “broccoli” cut. Though its name may be unfamiliar, the distinctive style is making waves among Gen Z.

Characterized by its closely shaved sides and a voluminous, curly top, the broccoli cut resembles the florets of broccoli. It’s also known by other colorful nicknames, including the “bird’s nest,” the “Zoomer perm,” and “alpaca teen gym bro hair.”

Hairstylist Rene Fris explained the look to PopSugar: “It’s achieved by cutting the hair in short, uneven layers that mimic the appearance of broccoli florets. The sides can be buzz-cut or shaved very close to the scalp, akin to a fade.”

While this haircut is particularly suited for those with curly hair, straight-haired individuals can also achieve the style with the help of a perm. According to the New York Post, even teenagers as young as 13 are opting for perms to achieve the broccoli look.

The haircut isn’t just a style—it’s become a statement. It’s associated with “F-boys” and high schoolers who frequent the gym more to socialize and be seen than to actually work out. Comedian Bryan Torresdey captured this sentiment in a TikTok video that has garnered over 65,000 likes, portraying the broccoli cut wearer as someone “chugging a Celsius while taking multiple selfies in the gym mirror.”

The hairstyle’s popularity is partly credited to influencers and celebrities. TikTok star and soccer player Noah Beck, YouTuber Jack Doherty, and boxer/influencer Bryce Hall have all contributed to the trend’s rise. Social media personality Dillon Latham noted, “All the guys coming up on TikTok, every guy who went viral and was considered highly attractive had this fluffy hair look. So it was kind of like, if you didn’t have that, you’re missing out.”

The broccoli cut is set to make an even bigger splash as it will appear on a major screen soon. Clark Kent will sport the look in the upcoming “Superman” movie, scheduled for release in 2025.
