NORTH MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — For 72 years, Marlene Jannenga has been a fixture in the world of hairstyling, transforming lives with her skill and dedication. Despite her battle with cancer, the 90-year-old remains resolute in her commitment to her craft.
Reflecting on her long career, Jannenga recalls a pivotal moment from her childhood. “In fourth grade, when asked what I wanted to be, I chose between a concert pianist and a hairdresser,” she chuckled. Her choice has proven to be a fulfilling one.
Jannenga has spent 66 of those years with A. Salon Hair and Skin Spa in North Muskegon, witnessing its evolution through three generations of ownership. “I started with Peggy White, then her daughter Lexi took over, and now Lexi’s daughter is poised to continue the legacy,” she explained. This continuity has allowed Jannenga to remain at the same salon throughout her career.
During her tenure under White, Jannenga served as the executive styles director, leading the introduction of new trends and techniques. “I would attend seminars, learn about new trends in haircuts and color, and bring that knowledge back to our salons,” she said. Her expertise has influenced stylists across the country.
For Jannenga, the joy of transforming clients is what keeps her going. “Changing someone’s appearance and making them feel good is incredibly rewarding. It’s why I can’t retire—I absolutely love every aspect of my work,” she shared.
Despite her age, Jannenga has no plans to retire. “When people ask when I’ll stop working, I tell them, ‘When I drop dead behind my chair,'” she said with determination.
Outside the salon, Jannenga is a matriarch of her family, with roles extending to wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her influence extends
