Six Common Hair-Washing Mistakes to Avoid for Healthier Hair

by lily

Washing your hair may seem like a simple routine, but experts warn that common mistakes can lead to dryness, frizz, or excessive oil production.

“Hair is most fragile when wet, so it’s important to wash it properly to prevent damage,” says hairstylist and Garnier ambassador Kat Thompson.

Here are six common hair-washing mistakes—and how to fix them.

1. Using the Wrong Shampoo and Conditioner

Not all hair products work for every hair type. “People with drier or frizzier hair need moisture-rich formulas, while those with fine hair should opt for lightweight products to avoid weighing it down,” explains Thompson. Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type is essential for maintaining its health and balance.

2. Overusing Clarifying Shampoo

Clarifying shampoos help remove product build-up, but using them too often can strip away essential natural oils. “Limit use to once a week or less to prevent drying out the scalp,” Thompson advises.

3. Washing Hair Too Frequently

Shampooing too often can lead to an overproduction of oil, making hair greasier in the long run. “Over-washing strips away natural oils, prompting the scalp to compensate by producing even more oil,” says Thompson. To extend time between washes, try using a dry shampoo.

4. Not Washing Enough

On the other hand, washing too infrequently can cause scalp build-up, leading to clogged follicles and an unhealthy scalp. “Social media trends promote washing hair only once a week, but this isn’t ideal for everyone,” Thompson says. She recommends washing every other day or as needed based on your hair type and lifestyle.

5. Using Water That’s Too Hot

Hot water can strip hair of moisture, leaving it dry and brittle. “While a hot shower may feel great, it’s better to rinse hair with lukewarm water to maintain hydration and shine,” Thompson suggests.

6. Drying Hair Too Roughly

Vigorously rubbing wet hair with a towel can cause breakage and frizz. “Instead, gently press the water out using a microfiber towel—it’s gentler on the hair and helps curly hair retain its natural shape,” Thompson advises.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can keep your hair healthier, shinier, and more manageable.
